GENERAL
Who can participate in ComputeX?

Any University of Michigan student can participate, including
graduate students. ComputeX is open to students across majors
and skill levels.
Do I need to know how to code?

Nope. ComputeX is about exploring how computing connects with
different fields, not just about becoming a programmer.
Do I have to become a Core Member?
+
Absolutely not. General members can come to any events they
want, whenever they want. Core is for students who want to
become more involved in shaping ComputeX.
CORE
How do I become a Core Member?
+
Fill out the Core Interest Form early in the semester and stay
engaged throughout the semester. As a guideline, we're looking
for participation/attendance at 3 of 5 socials and at least 2 workshops,
with 3 workshops preferred. We also encourage you to set up
a coffee chat with at least one of our board members so we can get to
know you better. At the end of the semester, anyone being considered
for Core will have a conversation with the Board.
Why are socials specifically 3 of 5?

Socials are one of the clearest ways to build community and
get to know other members. Since other event types may be more
tentative while ComputeX is getting started, the social
requirement gives us a consistent way to look for engagement.
What happens at the end-of-semester conversation?

It's a relatively casual conversation with the Board. We'll
talk about your semester, your interests, your involvement,
and whether Core makes sense for you going forward.
What can Core Members actually do?

Core Members attend biweekly meetings with the Board and other
Core Members, help shape ComputeX's direction, pitch ideas,
and can design and lead workshops. There may also be access to
limited-seat company visits later in the semester.
Does becoming Core guarantee a Board position?

No. Core membership makes you eligible to pursue a Board
position. Board applications are expected to open toward the
end of Winter semester.
EVENTS
Can I come to an event without formally joining?
+
Yes. General members can come and go as they please. You do
not need to become Core or make a semester-long commitment
to attend ComputeX events.
Can I suggest or lead a workshop?
+
Core Members can design and lead workshops. If you have an
idea before becoming Core, we'd still love to hear it.
COFFEE CHATS
What is a Coffee Chat?
+
A casual 30–60 minute conversation with a ComputeX Board member.
You can talk about careers, research, technology, your major,
ComputeX, an idea you're working on, or just get to know someone.
Can Coffee Chats be virtual?
+
Yes. Coffee Chats can happen either in person or virtually.
